Cohesion is the basement of text linguistic study.Cohesion has been largely explored by many scholars. However, lexical cohesion has received relatively little attention. On the basis of Halliday & Hasan's text cohesion, taking Chien Chung-shu's novel Fortress Besieged as language material, this thesis attempts to compare lexical cohesion in English and Chinese and systematically discusses translation strategies in accordance with the textual differences between the two languages. This thesis consists of six chapters.Chapter 1 makes a brief introduction of text, cohesion, coherence and the novel of Fortress Besieged.Chapter 2 reviews the studies on lexical cohesion both in abroad and in China.Chapter 3 goes into a detailed analysis on lexical cohesion in Fortress Besieged.Chapter 4 makes a further contrastive study on the similarities and differences of English and Chinese based on the former study. Chapter 5 attempts to probe into the translation strategies of these lexical cohesive devices.Chapter 6 is the conclusion.
