In this thesis cohesion in English-Chinese translation is analyzed within the framework set by Halliday & Hasan (1976), with some adjustment according to Hu Zhuanglin's (1994) theory. The sample consists of three parts: the source text and the two target texts. The source text is taken from Sons and Lovers, a novel by D. H. Lawrence. The two target texts are taken respectively from the translation by Liu Yizhi, Zhang Jinling and Zhang Yanhong and the translation by Chen Liangting and Liu Wenlan. The study is carried out in five aspects: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. The thesis consists of four parts. Chapter One is a brief introduction, including the definition of key terms, aims, setting, scope and sample size of the study. Chapter Two is a literature review, concerning discourse analysis, translation studies, the concept and categories of cohesion, the function of cohesion in the linguistic system, the relation between cohesion and coherence, the contrastive studies of cohesion, the contrast between English and Chinese and the relation between cohesion and translation. In Chapter Three, the sample is examined in the five aspects of cohesion as mentioned above. The last chapter is the conclusion of the study, which provides some implications for English-Chinese translation and some suggestions for further research.Due to the limitations of time, database and the author's ability, the thesis is only a tentative exploration of the profound fields of cohesion and translation. If it can shed some light on the studies of cohesion and translation, my efforts will be worth all the while.
