Xu Zhiyan is an important popular novelist in late Qing dynasty and early Republic of China. He was born in 1875,died in 1923.In his short life,he had written many books, including more than 200 Short Stories,5 History stories,3 teaching material. He had a colorful experience:he was an editor,a teacher, even a secretary.Thses experiences provided him many kinds of Materials. But for a long time,he did not gain enough concerns.I think it is a pity to fill these blanks in Literary History. My study is foucs on his all works.Through his books,it reavls his spirit. So my study is composed of two important parts. In part 2,1 stress to study his history storiese, including his creative motivations and perspectives. At the same time,on some important notions,I will give my own interpretations. There is an important problem:as his creative motivation is serious, why did he write《The Diary of Shi DaKai》.It is a fake diary. But its Significance is great. It provided us big space. In this part,Xu ZhiYan inherited traditional teaching,New factors are not very obviously,it brought reminiscence to his history storiese. The statement way of traditional discourse, inherited traditional creation subjects and language of classical elegance, which were his strong points, brought his great reputations, before "5.4"1919.But human is not still impersonality, human thinking is changing, with times changes. This change is distinct or concealment. So,finally this transform establish. However, where dose this change indicate, temporal circumstance midwiferied newspapering'development. In order to analyse this instance, the author collect all of his works in all kinds of magazines and newspapers. The change of degree affect his creation.Although history creation and magazine creation are not conflict. This situation still shows the difference inner core. Therefore, after finishing newspaper industry study and his main books, the third parts emphasize on his creative motivation, creative types and text analysis. In the first place,Xu ZhiYan is taken as a professional editor,so, "YuanYangHuDiePai"might gain a fair comment. These are not only his creative starting point, but also his significance.Factors that are different from history stories are obviously finally. But this shows the extent of how many factors of modernity,it is worth of studying.Compared to the past, how change did this context bring to creation? This part of the final innominate works react a kind of environmental literature. So,Xu ZhiYan finishied his own conversion.Although this conversion were in an adverse position,as an example,Xu ZhiYan gave us a large interpretation of space. He is a clear-cut case.Above these two parts,I have finished comprehensive consideration ofXu ZhiYan.In the last part,I will reappraise Xu ZhiYan's value,in modern context of words. On the studies of the research materials, this paper regards the traditional textual research ways as criterion, and regards the statistics as an important tool.I hope to make some accurate analysis as possible as I can.In text study, because of history story' particularity, the research is with official history comparison, using a traditional research way.Because of particularity of the magazine, the author thought that the modern narrative theory is valuable for reference, and the traditional theories of poetry, prose and novel have the rationality to explain the native literary works. Therefore, the author took an attitude that the above two methods should be used suitably in the analysis of the texts.Xu ZhiYan was a writer in special times. It is a pity that his works have not gained attentions broadly, even himself. So,The author hope to fill this blank as possible as I can.The author didn't want to be like Columbus to make a great judgment, but make collections, complementarity, textual research and analysis.
