Bai Xianyong and Chen Yingzhen are two writers with profound achievements and far-reaching influence in Taiwan literature or even in history of Chinese literature. Known as"a genius rarely seen among the contemporary short story writers"and"Taiwan's Luxun", Bai Xianyong and Chen Yingzhen have long been the focus of researchers and critics. Both of them show great enthusiasm for death theme. Under people-oriented literary creation concept, they have showed readers death in many identities and forms. They do not demonstrate death in a well blowout way to shock readers'visual sensation and psychological line of defense. They aren't absorbed in death writing in an objective and ruthless way; instead they cherish great humanitarianism and sympathy to write. Bai Xianyong and Chen Yingzhen have absorbed the essence of traditional Chinese culture, and on the other hand, they have borrowed advanced foreigh theory of literature and art to create the unique death atmosphere and magical aethestic space.This essay attempts to have a comparative study of contemplation on death in Bai Xianyong's and Chen Yingzhen's writings from the four aspects of identities of the dead, types of deaths, atmospheres created by deaths in their writings and reasons they are interested in writing death theme. From the analysis, two writers'concern for life, reflection on relations between human and society and times circumstance, ultimate care for culture and general human destiny can be expected to see.
