An Initial Probe Into The Correction Of Xiaozhuan In Shuowen Jiaoyi

Jiaoyi is an important writing of collating Shuowen,which not only adopted various views of diffirent specialists and did comprehensive study from exegetical studies,phonology studies,Chinese characters and so on,but also made some amendments,supplements and had some original ideas.As for the correction of font,correcting Xiaozhuan accountes for a considerable proportion in Jiaoyi.Referring to Jiaoyiyi,this thesis selects the correction of Xiaozhuan as the subject.On the one hand,it analyzes and summarizes the basis and methods in Jiaoyi exhaustively,and on the other,it collates the font of Xiaozhuan in Jiaoyi corrected on the ground of the unearched ancient characters available now.Then it points out the accomplishment and shortcoming of the correction of Xiaozhuan in Jiaoyi.This thesis includes three chapters:The first chapter outlines the researches on the collation of Shuowen and the biographical sketch of Yah and Yao,including whose researches on Shuowen.It clarifies the edition of Jiaoyi,introduces the relevant studies,the study motivation and methods of the thesis.The second chapter analyzes the methods and basis of the correcting Xiaozhuan in Jiaoyi.Two ways are applied to the correction.The first way bases on different editions of Shuowen,works of font,phonology,exegetical materials,historical documents,bronzes and stones materials and so on.The other way bases on the style of Shuowen,the font itself,other font and the rule of the evolution of font.Finally,the third chapter compares Jiaoyi with Jiaoyiyi,then collates and proves the Xiaozhuan corrected by Jiaoyi item by item,according to oracle bone inscriptions, inscriptions on bronze,characters of warring states period and so on,including relevant research results.There is not only accomplishment but also shortcoming in the correction of Xiaozhuan in Jiaoyi.The accomplishment should be affirmed and the shortcoming should not be denied.Then it makes an objective appraisal for the gains and losses of the correcting Xiaozhuan in Jiaoyi.
