In traditional Chinese residential buildings, the front wall which could hide the private lives away from public sight. It is a typical way of architecture in traditional Chinese residential buildings. It originates from the superstitious ideas in Chinese culture. It embodies a lot of contents from the traditional Chinese culture and folk culture. Brick-carving is a decorative form in the residential buildings, which has various divisions and techniques to express its abstract meanings. Brick-carving is the outstanding cultural heritage in China. It has a long history. Due to the special landscape from geographic point of view and the cultural traditions, it is prevalent among those who live in the northern part of China to apply brick-carving to the front wall decoration.The author of the essay made a field trip to research on the brick-carvings art styles in Shaanxi and Shanxi. The author used the front wall brick-carvings as the research target in the northern traditional Chinese residential buildings, and analyzed them from the aesthetical point combining with history, architecture, sociology and folk customs. By the analysis of the form of construction patterns,the way of carving,the designing of patterns,the embodiment of cultural elements in brick-carving, the author made a delicate study of the front wall as a decorative means.The front wall brick-carving is a way to show the essence of traditional Chinese culture. On its way to development, it absorbs the characteristics of diverse cultures and has a deep root from the traditional Chinese culture. By the research, the author digs out the art essence from traditional Chinese folk cultures and customs. From the research, the author intends to learn from the traditional decorative methods and its cultural pursuits in order to apply it in the modern decoration.
