Dr.Eugene Nida is a prominent translation theorist and linguist in the West.Through more than fifty years of translation practice and studies,he reached a fruitful achievement on translation theories. Most importantly, translation criterion of"dynamic equivalence"and"equivalent readers' response"break through the static study pattern in Chinese traditional translation theories and pave a new way of research style of translation study and the establishment of new theorist model of translation.Nida's translation theory have been a hot issue for more than 20 years in translation research field in China.Since the introduction of his theory into China, both approval and disapproval comment from variety of perspectives on the theory exist.Prof.Chen Hongwei named this"Nida phenomenon".Because of Nida's emphasis on the"equivalent readers' response",the domestication and foreignization translation conception proposed by Venuti, and consequent dispute on whether domestication or foreignization was preferred in translation and dialectical consensus all take the receptors' response as important consideration,Nida's translation theory and domestication-foreignization can be studied within a same circle. And domestication-foreignization is also a discussing issue in Evan Zohar's Polysystem Theory. The theory argue that whether translated literature occupy central or peripheral role in Polysystem result in translators' selection of domestication or foreignization strategy, and whether direct or free translation.Based on the prior study on Nida's translation theory, the author of this thesis studies the fulfillment of Nida's maximal functional equivalence in light of questioning on Polysystem Theory.Contents of this study are the hypothesized condition of proximity to maximal functional translation equivalence:1.Whether or not the special condition of polysystem,ie., the unclear position of translated literature in receptors' literature polysystem.2 the adoption of foreignization translation strategy.I hope the research on the fulfillment of Nida's maximal functional equivalence in light of questioning on Polysystem Theory will be a new guide to translating. This study will be helpful to form a deep understanding to Nida's translation theory.
