Translation has traditionally been considered as a process of one language beingconverted into another. Therefore, the study of translator was at first solely focused ontranslating activities and translation ideas. However, with the progress made in translationtheories since the 1970s, the translator, as a target of translation studies, has receivedincreasing attention, so have the translator's personal life experiences and his/her socialbackground. Such a tendency deserves serious devotion of researchers in translator studies.In the development of modern China's children's literature history, a large number ofChinese scholars, including those who are translators and writers at the same time, havemade important contributions to the prosperity of China's children's literature. Meanwhile,there emerged a great many outstanding translators and writers specializing in children'sliterature. And Ren Rongrong is one of them.Taking advantage of his knowledge of four foreign languages, namely Russian,English, Italian and Japanese, Ren Rongrong has translated over 300 books of foreignchildren's literature from more than 10 countries in the period of over a half of a centurysince the 1940s. The author of this thesis, by choosing Ren Rongrong as a case study, hopesto evaluate more objectively Ren as a translator of children's literature against the historicalbackground, his translating thoughts on children's literature and the relationship betweenhis translating and writing practice.The author expects that the systemic discussion will be of some avail to children'sliterature in China, as well as to an integral study on Ren Rongrong.
