At present, with the rapid economic development, urbanization is aggravating a serious of threats to cultural heritage, especially the large-scale cultural heritage. It's become a focus of public attention to explore ways of using spatial information technology in conserving the large-scale cultural heritage. Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, one of the major cultural heritages in China and even the whole world, is now subject to unprecedented destruction. With a growing awareness of the cultural heritage of humanity, the urgency of protecting the canal has been considerably emphased. In 2006, Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal had been. included in the list of the national heritage conservation units as well as in the list of candidates of world cultural heritage. So recgnizing specific information of the Canal today should be in the front.Recently, as spatial technology develops, it has been applied in a large variety of fields. A number of practices of spatial technology, executed by foreign angencies, had proved its efficiency in protecting cultural heritage. For protecting, we should survey details of the canal firstly. Building Cultural Heritage Spatial Database is one of effective methods in detecting information of the canal, and also is the basis of other processes. The construction of Cultural Heritage Spatial Database in China, however, is still staying in original step for the lack of a series of mature technologies. This paper, based on previous practices, studies in designing and building of Cultural Heritage Spatial Database of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal combined with the research of the National Key Technology R&D Program( No:2006BAK30B01) "The applied research of Spatial Information Technology at large-scale cultural heritage(Beijing- Hangzhou Grand Canal as an example)". This paper studies details and processes of protecting Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and also analysed the data both on resorces and standards; by cooperating and communicating with CNICP and other units, it, considering cultural Heritage classification and coding rules, designs and draws up classification and coding system of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Heritage; it also dose researshes on Geodatabase Model in deep and combined with the characteristics of protecting data involving Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal designed the cultural heritage of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal of the Geodatabase Data Model; in-depth researches on the ArcSDE for Oracle's mass data storage program and the completion of the cultural heritage of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal database library work have been covered. It is the first large-scale linear water living cultural heritage database that Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Database of Culture Heritage is. And it could be a reference for building other large-scale cultural heritage database, especially for the water resources database.
