Chinese has a history of 3000 years' of paper literature, leaving abundant dialect materials. 2000 years' Chinese dialect research accumulates lots of achievements. It is not easy enough for us to resort to traditional paper language map to solve the problem how to integrate rich materials and achievements so as to show how Chinese dialect history evolves.Geographic Information System appears with the development of computer graphics technology, digital picture disposal and database system. A great number of changes happen to us to gather, store, analyze and express, which helps us to dispose of those abundant dialect data. And TGIS provides us with a strategy to deal with dialect data further. The purpose of the study is to use GIS and establish CHDGIS. CHDGIS is of great significance for us to know about how Chinese dialect located in a specific period and to check quickly how dialect features evolved, to observe vividly the historic evolution and change of dialect spot, part and area, to know about spatial relations and chronological ones, to test the correctness of the existing dialect research and predict the development trend of Chinese dialect, and to explain the language location and explore language mechanism in the perspective of non-language factors. The main purpose of establishing CHDGIS is not to partition Chinese dialects in different periods but to present the location of CHD characteristics. It will provide a CHD material warehouse based on time and space, which helps researchers to examine Chinese dialect changes in a whole and historic perspective, and to exploit it secondly based on their own understanding the Chinese evolvement mode or their own study needs. The study tries to establish CHDGIS based on Tan Qixang's Chinese Historic Maps, a CHD vocabulary warehouse based on words included in Yang Xiong's FangyYan and a database of pronunciation, grammar and non-language factors. And then they will be integrated to explore Chinese dialect evolution on Chinese history.
