A Study On The English Translation Of The Thunderstorm From The Aesthetic Perspective

The connection between translation and aesthetics is long both in theory and in practice; however, it is still a new branch of philosophy for us. The integration of literary translation and aesthetics is a perfect marriage. Aesthetics is a subject intended to examine beauty and human's sense towards beauty, while translation aesthetics is an intermediary discipline mediating between aesthetics and translation studies. Since literary work is a concrete expression of art, its unique aesthetic characteristics determine that the aesthetic values in it and its translations can be analyzed in the light of aesthetics. So, to further study translation and aesthetics'relationship and promote translation's development is a question lying before us.Alexander Baumgarten, a German philosopher, was the first one found aesthetics, he was the father of Aesthetics .Confucius was the first one made aesthetics into a system, he discussed aesthetics must be in line with the ideas of"true"and"kind", which is the standard for criticizing aesthetics. This thesis takes the similarities and differences in China and West aesthetic translation and the aesthetic influence of aesthetic object and aesthetic subject to the translation as basis, analyzes subject and object of aesthetic involving in the aesthetic act of literary translation. The beauty of the original text is expressed by translator who is the aesthetic subject, the translator should recreate the aesthetic characteristics of the original text in another language through groping the aesthetic features in original. The beauty of the translated text is expressed by reader who is the aesthetic subject; the translated text's aesthetic feature is realized in the reading of target language text. This thesis takes Thunderstorm and its English version as an example, states the translator Wang Zuoliang and his translation views, and how his views influence him to translate Thunderstorm, to find out aesthetic translation criteria and aesthetic features. The standard of aesthetics is unity of form and content, the form and content of version must conform to the features of form and content of the original. The artistic beauty of form includes phonology and syntax. The artistic beauty of content includes style and image. They are independent and interrelated, and fit to the people's aesthetic experience.It is far from enough for literary translators only to convey the sense of the original, they should also utilize their own literary accomplishments and transfer the aesthetic value of the original to let the target readers experience its beauty.
