Chinese characters are written symbols which record the Chinese language. In Chinese class, Chinese characters teaching course is successful or not, which is directly related to the effect of Chinese class. However, in the process of teaching, students are usually afraid of learning Chinese characters, at the same time, teachers often ignore the importance of Chinese characters teaching as well. So Chinese characters teaching has become a lag part in Chinese class and it still stays in the dependent status. In fact, Chinese characters teaching not only can influence the writing course, but also is the basis of other curriculum teaching courses. What’s more, it is closely related with teaching vocabularies, listening skills and Chinese culture. The Chinese characters teaching should become a special course and independent of the other courses. At the same time, teaching characters should be an important part of other courses. It is not enough that just teaching the strokes, components and meanings of one character in Chinese class. At present, it is still not formed in teaching theory among the history and cultural connotation of characters, the relationship of characters, words and sentences and other issues. Through investigating and analyzing the situation of Chinese characters teaching by the8universities, this paper tries to find out the problems which exist among the long-term students in Xi’an. In addition, according to the problems which are found in curriculum, teaching materials and teaching process, this paper proposes some solutions. Besides the foreword, the main content of this paper is divided into four parts:Firstly, introduce and analyze the situation of Chinese characters teaching course in Xi’an. Secondly, analyze the problems which exist in Chinese characters teaching in Xi’an. Thirdly, introduce the significance and principles of Chinese characters teaching, and emphasize the importance of Chinese characters in Chinese class. At the same time, discuss the effective teaching methods which can be used to teach Chinese characters. Finally, try to discuss and predict the effect of the Chinese characters teaching in the future.
