| Modern Chinese Dictionary is an important language learning tool. Since published for many years, this book, which has made a significant contribution to the promotion of Putonghua, and to the promotion of standardization of Chinese, has played a huge role to the cause of China's cultural education and scientific research. The book was officially published in 1978, so far been amended five times. The biggest characteristic of the fifth amended is that it has made a full tagging for parts of speech on the words of modern Chinese collected in the dictionary, which will meet new requirements that the information age asks to the Chinese dictionaries, as well as will provide the convience for the preposition research in this paper.Preposition is one of Chinese functional words which have a complex function, involving various factors. Its number is limited, but it holds an important position in Chinese grammar system. The syntactic function of preposition acts as an attributive and an adverbial, etc. though a prepositional phrase by attached to the other words. Although preposition itself can not be used alone, however, it has a high frequency usage by its composition of prepositional phrases, and a diverse usage.In this paper, I have researched the classification and interpretation of the preposition in Modern Chinese Dictionary, the fifth edition. The preface introduces preposition and other related research. Chapter II describes the meaning of tagging the speech of parts in Modern Chinese Dictionary, the standards of the preposition classification, and makes a classification to the preposition in Modern Chinese Dictionary, the fifth edition.Chapter III and IV is a research on preposition interpretation. Comparing horizontally the Modern Chinese Dictionary the fifth edition with the 800 Words in Modern Chinese and Functional Words in Modern Chinese Dictionary, we come to understand the difference between Modern Chinese Dictionary the fifth edition and them, as well as the merits of Modern Chinese Dictionary in the aspect of interpretation. Chapter IV is to introduce the approach of Modern Chinese Dictionary in preposition interpretation. The last chapter is a progressive introduction to the whole dictionary.Hope that this paper can provide a help for the research of preposition, as well as for further amendments of Modern Chinese Dictionary. |
