Since the late Ching dynasty, studying abroad has become China's important way of learning from the west. Based on the "curriculum---major---college" on pedagogy, this thesis discusses the close relationship between abroad students and modern art education in Chengdu, from the perspective of district study.Modern Chinese Art History witnesses two rush periods of studying abroad: studying in Japan after the defeat of Sino-Japanese War in 1895 and the work-study program in France after the Revolution of 1911. After their coming back, the returned students, who are major in art, introduced the western art theories and methods from Japan, Europe and America. New styles of art schools are built and modern art talents are trained. Chinese art education achieved fast transformation from traditional art education to modern art education during the former period of the 20th century and has become one the great cradles for world art education, all of these, in some aspects, are due to the decisive contribution of the art-education experts who have abroad studying experiences. Sichuan province plays an important role in the national studying-abroad activities. Not only does it send out lots of students to study abroad, under the special historical background, it has become a major absorber of artists who are back from abroad studying.This thesis is divided into five parts:the first part is introductions which mainly focus on introducing the current research situation, research method and purpose of this thesis. The second part mainly narrates the reasons for and detailed situations about the two studying-abroad activities in the recent Chinese art history. The third part pays attention to the rise of art education in Chengdu, including opening art courses in common school, setting up art education department in normal university and the functions made by the art students who are studying in Japan. The fourth part deals with the initial development of Chengdu's art education before the Sino-Japanese war, the development of professional art schools in Chengdu and the gap between Chengdu's art education development and that of costal areas. The fifth part gives out the characteristics of Chengdu's prosperous art education under the background of lots of art schools and artists back from abroad has moved into the western areas during the anti-Japanese War period. Besides, the function that art students back from abroad had made in this part.The modernization of Chengdu art education is the miniature of the national wide modernization of art education. And the prosperous development of Chengdu's art education also shows that although Chengdu is an inland city, it praise highly grace and respect literature and art. The art students back from Japan has paved strong basis for the institutionalization of modern Chengdu art education. During the anti-Japanese war period, lots of abroad-studied students came back, they greatly enriched Chengdu's art education and lead Chengdu into the front rank among the Mid-western cities on modern art education. Therefore, it is absolutely meaningful to study about the student abroad and modern art education in Chengdu.
