The package of cigarette is a special medium which can reflect the social ideology. It is not just a kind of physical materials, but also a kind of cultural resources of historical, aesthetic value. From the perspective of sociology, the paper examines the development of cigarette packaging in China, involving theories of politics, economics, communication, esthetics, etc. According to the analysis of the social ideologies in different stages since cigarette becomes famous in China, this paper shows a deep and thorough study of the influence of political situation, economic system, and culture on the visual themes, design form, and technological quality of the cigarette package, in order to find the background factors and essential reasons that the visual images and technical skills of the package have been changing through different periods, and to summarize its types, features and patterns during its development. The paper also describes the westernization of the Chinese cigarette package in different periods, and initial exploration has been made in the reflection of the intercourse and collision between Chinese and western culture in the cigarette package.
