Directional words have been discussed frequently by linguists, because they are specific types which have complicated grammar and luxuriant semantic. This thesis based on other research achievements, ananlyzes"shànɡ","xià","qián","hòu","lǐ(zhōnɡ,nèi)","wài",three pairs directional words from a cognitive view. Then, combining the cognitive theory with teaching practice, classify their emergence &ellipsis when they have been used in the Preposition frames, and explain the rule and exception. The teaching of directional words is one of important and difficult points, owing to the affections from the L1 transfer, cognitive differences, learners'attitude and kinds of teaching factors and so on. According to some errors made by foreign students in learning, this thesis simply ananlyzes the reasons from five aspects: cognitive factors, L1 negative transfer…,and suggests some teaching strategies. As to the problem that the application of metaphorical theory during the teaching, the thesis suggests several assumptions according to Wang Ying's teaching opinion: the combination of Linguistic competence, Communicative competence and Metaphorical competence.
