Characteristics Of Northwest Hui Warlord

The forming process of Northwest Hui warlord which descends from the great ShanGan hui uprising in late Qing Dynasty is rather complicated in Chinese modern history. For quite a long time, Qinghai, Ningxia and the Hexi region of Gansu remained feudal separation. Based on previous studies and historical documents and adhering to historical materialism and a realistic attitude, this thesis collects, reorganizes and reinterprets the fundamental historical facts about Northwest Hui warlord. From all the perspectives of its governance, such as military, politics and economy, a thorough study on the essential historical facts concerning the origin, formation and development of Northwest Hui warlord is performed to explore its unique characteristics and the reason why it survived all the political turbulence.The main body of this thesis is divided into three parts.The first part, the social development and religious status of Muslims in northwest, as well as the governability crisis of Qing government, provided opportunities for the transformation from Hui insurgents to Hui local military government. Then in the following political changes, the Hui warlords successfully seized their historical opportunities and constantly adjusted themselves to the development of the political environment and completed the conversion of their political roles. Consequently, a military group has managed to take its first step.In The second part, the characteristics of Northwest Hui warlord existing during its long-term feudal governance are expounded, mainly including its feudal despotism, the role of Islam, and the actual feudal separatist rule under the seeming obedience of central leadership.In the third part, grounding on the development of Islam in northwest and the complicated political situation on those days, the reason for Northwest Hui warlord's long-term existence is analyzed from two aspects: the Exertion of religious polices and the flexible political ploys.
