Cause and Effect is a commonly existed relationship in naturalworld and human society. Each nation employs different ways toexpress cause and efl~ct relationship. This paper ii only defined inthe contrastive study of English and Chinese Cause and EffectCompound sentences ?the basic way of expressing cause andeffect relationship by English and Chinese nation. This paperadopts contrastive method. Firstly, it makes contrasts betweenEnglish and Chinese Cause and Effect Compound Sentences fromthe aspects of structural mechanism, ways of expressing cause andeffect relationship, sentence order and semantic types. Then itfinds out the similarities and differences between them andftntherly explains their cognitive reasons. Finally, it demonstratesthat the existence of cognitive similarities and differences ofhuman beings is the basic reason of the existence of languagesimilarities and differences of human beings.This paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter serves asan introduction. It illustrates the purpose and meaning of thispaper, the possibility of making contrast between them, methodsemployed in the paper and the previous study on English andChinese compound sentence in English and Chinese linguisticcircle, and also the author抯 argument. The second chapter makescontrast between English and Chinese Cause and effectrelationship from the aspect of structural mechanism, ways ofexpressing cause and effect relationship, sentence order, andIIIsemantic type. The third chapter sums up the contrasflve resultsand furtherly explains their basic reason from the angle ofcognitive similarities and differences of human beings. The fourthchapter is the conclusion of this paper.By the contrastive study, it is clear that there exists manysimilarities and differences in English and Chinese Cause andEffect Compound Sentences, and they can be explained by thetheory of human beings?cognitive similarities and differences.This result shows that the existence of human beings?cognitivesimilarities and differences is the root of the existence of humanbeings?linguistic similarities and differences. This study will bebeneficial to the relevant second language teaching andtranslation work, and it can also offer an effective way forexplaining the contrastive results from the angle of cognition.
