Globalization is an unrestrained trend in the world. Communication between different nations or different cultures is more frequent than ever before. Intercultural communication has become a normality of modern society, which demands necessary cultural attainment and nice intercultural communication competence as the basic quality of modern citizens. Intercultural communication course in universities is an important method for promoting the quality. However, there are several problems existing in the orientation and mode of the course in our universities. These problems result in the course cannot fulfill its function and value. Former researches in this area only focus on the phenomenon rather than the reason.This thesis uses the theories of intercultural communication, culturology and curriculum to definite the orientation and value of intercultural communication course. After getting a macroscopical image of the course in Chinese and American universities through sampling method, the thesis finds out the problems of our course and proposes some suggestions for solving them. The critical factor of promoting intercultural communication course in Chinese universities is to definite it as a liberal education course which helps students develop their cultural attainment and intercultural communication competence. Only by having a right orientation of the course, can we develop the course in a right way and fulfill its function of improving students'cultural attainment and intercultural communication competence.
