| Skopostheory was introduced into translation theoretical field in late1970s. Hans J. Vermeer and other German scholars believe that Translation is a purposeful human activity based on the source text. Translators should selectively render the source text with the consideration of the clients'requirements, the translating purpose and the tastes of the target readers. The quality of translation is determined by whether it fulfills the translation purpose. Munday(80) believes the supreme advantage of skopostheory is that it allows a text to be translated in different ways according to translation skopos and translator's task, which makes the hot debate between domestication and foreignization come to an end. Within the framework of skopostheory, adequacy, as a new criterion, takes the place of equivalence, an old yardstick of translation.Within the framework of skopostheory, the author of this thesis intends to probe into the translation of culture-loaded words of within the four subsystems of culture classified by Nida: linguistic culture, religious culture, material culture and social culture. This thesis will focus on three English versions of Yi Jing, which are from Legge, a British missionary, Wnag Rongpei and Ren Xiuhua, Chinese translators, and Li Yan, a Chinese yiologist. The author believes translator should adopt different translation methods and strategies in the translation process according to different translation skoposes to obtain certain effect. Legge mainly adopts foreinization for the convenience of his missionary duty and western sinological research. Both Li Yan and Wang Rongpei try to keep the original cultural characteristics, and they adopt domestication to achieve Chinese culture spreading purposean to reduce the difficulty from readers'side. The main difference is that Li Yan, as a yiologist, concerns more on the translation's historical value. Since their skopos overlap to some extent, so their translating strategies are sometimes the same.
