On The Translation Of Culture-Loaded Terms In Lun Yu-Exemplified By Three English Versions

Nowadays, English has become a language received all over the world. The history and culture it bears no longer just belong to the creation of the Anglo-Saxon times. As a part of the western culture, English language as well has been involved in the process of globalization and localization. In China, there is an increasingly aware of the localization of English language, as when describing unique things and phenomena in Chinese culture in English, people find lexical gaps, they find no corresponding words or expressions in English. So very naturally, the study of culture-loaded terms is brought into people's attention.Lun Yu is a bright pearl in Chinese culture, and it is also the fertile soil in which the traditional Chinese culture has been cultivated. It can be studied as a perfect example of culture-loaded terms translation and cross-culture communication. Meanwhile, lots of topics about this book have been discussed, for example, the comparison of different English versions of Lun Yu, the translation of verbs in Lun Yu, the significance of Gu's version of Lun Yu and so on. But few studies deal specifically with the translation of culture-loaded terms in Lun Yu. In the light of Nida's classification of culture-loaded terms and Lefevere's culture translation theories, this thesis aims to study the cultural aspects of the three influential English versions of Lun Yu respectively translated by the Scottish Sinologist James Legge, the Chinese eccentric literati Gu Hongming and the noted Sinologist Arthur Waley, and tries to summarize some translation strategies for translating Chinese culture-loaded words and phrases.This thesis studies on the translation of culture-loaded terms based on the above three English versions of Lun Yu, it mainly contains six parts. The first two parts illustrate the theoretical base and significance of the study, part three and four analyze the translation strategies of specific examples in Lun Yu according to the classification of culture-loaded words and expressions by Nida, and the last two parts are summary and major findings of the whole thesis. This thesis aims at making certain contributions to the accumulation of good examples of culture-loaded terms, which may promote the communication, understanding and cooperation between China and the other parts of the world.
