An Analysis Of Film Script Translation From The Perspective Of A Functionalist Approach

The thesis is an attempt to apply a German functionalist approach to film script translation, with the case study of two Chinese versions of the American animated film Kung Fu Panda, which won the Annie Awards --- the "Oscar" awards in animation field in 2008, and won Jinhou Awards in China as the best animation foreign film in 2009.The thesis consists of a theoretical discussion and a case study. The transcription is adopted to collect two Chinese versions respectively from DVD and Internet; descriptive and comparative analyses are carried out with exemplification. Under the guidance of German functionalist Christine Nord's more comprhensive approach, the case study is conducted from three aspects--- interpreting translation brief, translation-oriented source-text analysis, and target-text analysis. The translation brief analysis determines what kind of translation would be needed, the source-text analysis clarifies the influence of the source text on the target text, and finally, the results of the comparative target-text analysis are obtained from Coherence rule, Fidelity rule, and Functionality plus Loyalty principle to explore some reasons for the final choose between the two versions in DVD.The thesis aims to combine a functionalist approach into English-Chinese film script translation study, hoping it will be helpful in further study of film script translation on quality improvement and criticism.
