The Issue Of Time In The Chinese Contemporary Vanguard Novels

Novel is considered as an art of time, and its emergence,development are closely linked to the concept of time. The rise of Chinese contemporary vanguard novel which took place in 1980s, was a major event in the history of the development of Chinese contemporary literature, and had profound impact on the development of the Chinese contemporary literature. This dissertation tries to begin with the specific manifestation of avant-garde's concept of time in texts, combined with related theoretical works, to ascertain the concept of time of vanguard, and to explain the characteristics of vanguard novels in the issue of time. This article is divided into three parts: the first part discusses the importance of time in novels and the emergence of issue of time in Chinese contemporary vanguard novels. Since Chinese contemporary vanguard novels have considerable influences, and intensive modern time consciousness, hence, Chinese contemporary vanguard novels as an academic sample of issue of time, have special value and significance. In the second part, we make an analysis of the characteristics of narrative time in Chinese contemporary vanguard novels, which based on Theory of Narrative, combined with works of vanguard novel and dig into the specific characteristics of vanguard novel's narrative time. We study the issue from four angles: sequence, rhythm, multiple narrative and anchrony. The third part specially discusses the concept of time of avant-garde. Avant-garde, influenced by western modern concept of time, place emphasis on subjective psychic time, make full use of the structural function of time, breach the armor of traditional novel's linear time structure, and display its unique art-style.
