The Translator's Dominant Function In The Process Of Translating

Translation is a human activity that has two thousand years of history. The existence of translation theory is almost as old as that of translation. As the theory comes from practice, the existence of translation theories accompanied with the beginning of translation activities. In these translation theories that have over two thousand years history, the translation experts experienced a process from neglect to manifestation for the studying of translator: the most active factor in translating. For a long time, the focus that the translation experts discussed has always been the translation methods and standards. They paid less attention to translator and did not realize the decisive function of translator for the process of translating. The thesis puts forward the conception of translator's dominant function based upon the previous research and tries to use it to explain the completion of translating process for emphasizing the important status of translator and confirming the dominant function of translator in the process of translating.The thesis defined the dominant function of translator and distinguished it from translator's subjectivity, and then the thesis described the three traits of it. The thesis stated the translating program directly and explicitly with Bell's translating process model. The combination of Bell's translating process model with the explanation of translator's dominant function made the topic of the thesis more distinct. After the explanation of the definition,exemplification,practice and the limited factors of translator's dominant function, the thesis made a conclusion: (1) Translator's dominant function is not translator-centered theory; (2) the translator should realize his or her responsibilities completely to be a qualified translator.
