On C-E Translation Of Hard News Headlines From The Angle Of Skopostheorie

A headline is an inseparable part of a news report. A wonderful headline is itself a piece of brief news. It, on the one hand, is a quintessence of a report, making a crucial touch, and on the other hand, attracts the readers' attention and intrigues them to read on. Not being vivid as soft news headlines, hard news headlines still need to cater to the readers' pleasure and attract their attention at the first sight.For quite a few years, researchers have discussed the translation of news headlines from various perspectives, such as language and culture, functional equivalence, aesthetics, inter-cultural communication, etc., and achieved a lot in research findings. However, systematic research on the translation of hard news headlines still needs to be improved essentially.On the basis of the previous research, this thesis aims to discuss systematically the translation of hard news headlines from the perspective of Skopostheorie. It takes Chinese and English headlines in People's Daily and China Daily as the source materials, and analyzes the hard news headlines in them within the framework of Skopostheorie. Through establishing a database, the author of this thesis classifies the collected data and analyzes them in different types, aiming to offer a new perspective to the translation of hard news headlines. Besides, comparison, classification, induction and other methods will be applied in this research.The choice and translation of hard news headlines should first of all be focused on the function of the headline. In other words, the translation of headlines should retain the basic information on the one hand, and try to attract the readers' eyes on the other, which is the object of translating hard news headlines under the guidance of Skopostheorie. The realization of this object depends on the function of the headlines. Any translating skill that can achieve this goal is believed to be reasonable and efficient, i.e., "the end justifies the means", which is also a basic principle in Skopostheorie.One of the purposes of translating hard news headlines is to convey to readers the information. To begin with, the contents of the original news headline should be faithfully transmitted, which requires fidelity in translating. Next, in order to absorb the target readers' attention, some adjustment should be made according to the target culture and custom. In a word, translating a hard news headline under the guidance of Skopostheorie should be a "faithful" recreation of the original news headline.This thesis divides the translating process of hard news headlines into three steps. The first step is to understand the original headline and the contents of the news report. Then a trial translation comes into being. In this step, with the help of suitable translating strategies, understanding in the former step is expressed in words. The last step is modification, which can be observed from three respects: cultural difference, aesthetics and motion evoke.
