This thesis attempts to study the news headline translation, which, as one specific way of information exchange, is the most important part of news translation. The import and export of news reports, especially of news reports'headlines, attract scholars'eyeballs all the time. Many studies concerning the translation of news headlines have been done merely from the perspectives of rhetoric, grammar, diction and style of news headlines. The restricted research perspective results in the fact that duplicate subjects appear from time to time, and it is difficult to find a new way to develop news headline studies further. Moreover, most of the studies mentioned above are static. They are defined in a certain language environment to discuss why the news headlines are successful in this fixed context. In daily life, it is not difficult to find that some news headlines are remembered more easily and quoted more frequently than others. They may become catchwords in a certain period; even affect people's speaking way to some extent. Why does this kind of phenomenon exist? Are there some mechanisms hidden behind these popular news headlines? What enlightenment can we get from this phenomenon and mechanisms when translating news headlines? This paper tries to find the answers to these questions step by step.Since Richard Dawkins first mentioned the term"meme"in The Selfish Gene, more than thirty years have passed and several scientists have stepped into the realm of memetics. Memetics has come into the studies of biology, psychology, sociology and linguistics. In the present study, memetics, as the leading theoretical foundation, is utilized to serve as the standard or methodology of comparing and contrasting the English version and Chinese version of the same news headline. Via the contrastive analysis, it is aimed to find out some important factors that affect the transmission of news headline memes and memetic mechanisms for E-C translation of news headlines. Finally, some specific and feasible strategies are given after the discussion about language memes'transmission mode and language imitation theory. Finally, this thesis concludes that the vitality of translated news headline memes in the target culture has closed relationship with cognitive, especially the memory mechanism, emotive and cultural elements, and that some strategies in meme transmission mode and language imitation theory can shed lights to news headline translation practice. The success of news headline translation is the result of translators'adaptation to these three aspects and utilizing appropriate strategies.
