With a long history in our country, appellation has a close relationship with the ancient social system, the patriarchal system, the marriage system and so on. Many scholars have had quite a few achievements in the field of the appellation study. However, the monograph in this field needs further development. Until now there is no dissertation which focuses on the Jin Ping Mei appellation system. Furthermore, I describe, interpret and summarize their features. This paper also embodies the diachronic comparative study, static and dynamic study. This paper is divided into five chapters. In the preface, I briefly introduce the overview of the Chinese appellation studies, the definition of appellation and its classification, as well as the current research situation of the appellations in Jin Ping Mei.In the Chapter I, I describe in detail the classification of the kinship appellation in Jin Ping Mei and summarize their features. I make a diachronic comparative study and analyze them with the vocabulary development theory in linguistics. In Chapter II, I refer to the social appellation classification in Ancient Chinese Appellation Study written by Wang Qi. Combining with the features of Jin Ping Mei ,I have my classification of the appellation in the social communication concerning gender, seniority, social intercourse, industry and official position. I have a detailed analysis of the appellation words in the social communication because of their distinctiveness. I also summarize the features of their use.In Chapter III, on the basis of the case analysis in the first two chapters, I conclude the language features of the appellation use in Jin Ping Mei. I analysis the both sides of the contradiction, i.e. both subordination and insubordination to the traditional pragmatic principle. In Chapter IV, I compare the appellation of Jin Ping Mei with that of the Dictionary of Chinese name. And I collect some appellation words, which can't be found in the Dictionary of Chinese name. I hope these materials would be useful for the future dictionary compilation. In the conclusion part, I summarize the features of appellation in Jin Ping Mei.Because of a great number of appellation words in this paper, I have an appendix which lists every appellation and the page number of its first appearance for reference.
