Study Of Science Fiction Translation From The Perspective Of Integrated Approach

The marriage between science and literature brings about a typical literature genre-science fiction, which drives the development of human society. This genre was introduced into China from the west through translation that provides a new horizon and impetus for Chinese SF production. However, the hybrid nature of science fiction results in people's long-term misunderstanding about this genre, which hinders the development of SF translation. Besides, little work has been done in the field of SF translation study. This thesis, on the basis of Snell-Hornby's integrated approach, tries to provide a new perspective to the study of SF translation.Dichotomy and typology have long dominated the categorization of translation theories. Dichotomy suggests that everything must belong to one part or the other while typology focuses on the static separation and clear classification of texts. However, both of the two categorization methods are too mechanical and inoperative. The Integrated Approach introduces the gestalt theory and prototype principle and sets up the stratificational model which dissert the conventional static classification of texts and also reflects the dynamic and interdisciplinary characteristics of translation studies. This approach provides new theoretical basis for the recognition of the nature of SF texts and SF translation. The two categorization methods provide us new theoretical basis for the recognition of nature of SF text and SF translation. However, the thesis spotted some inconsistencies in the original stratificational model and revised it in response to the questions Jeremy Mundy put forward on the original model.The Integrated Approach creates a top-down and holistic model for translation study by absorbing the translation ideas and advantages of the current major translation schools the linguistic oriented translation school, the cultural oriented translation school, the functional school as well as the ideas of hermeneutic theory and the theory of aesthetic response and applying the scenes-and-frames semantics for translation analysis and translation production. This thesis, based on the revised stratificational model and the borrowed theories, made an attempt to summarize the general procedures for translation evaluation, namely, stage 1:preliminary analysis; stage 2:macro-analysis of the linguistic and cultural aspects of source texts and target texts; stage 3:micro-analysis of the linguistic and cultural aspects of source texts and target texts and stage 4:readers'response to the target texts. The concluded procedures have been testified in the evaluation of two Chinese versions of A Loint of Paw written by Isaac Asimov, whereby the feasibility of the Integrated Apporach's guidance to the study of SF translation has been proved.
