Urbanization is the hot issue of the whole society. With the development of urbanization, the study on how to realize urban modernization is put on the agenda. Faced to the weak side of all the studies on urbanization, this thesis discusses the interactive relationship between urbanization and urban modernization. The main contents can be read as following, using the historical, empirical and institutional analysis methods.The whole thesis includes theory analysis, empirical analysis and countermeasure analysis. In the theory analysis, the author introduces the connotation of urbanization and urban modernization and the relationship between them. The concept of urbanization in broad sense is an advancement compared with other related concepts. The most important innovation is the notion of interactive relationship between urbanization and urban modernization. There is no similar research .founded in other material.Then the author gives examples of how to promote the development of urbanization and urban modernization. In this part, the authorIValso expounds the institutional obstacles and institutional innovation, taking advantage of institutional analysis means. It is also an innovative angle to analysis this problem. The author emphasizes the importance of informal institution which is novel compared with other material concerning the urbanization.Following the empirical analysis, the thesis analyzes the problems of urbanization and urban modernization in China, compares China with foreign countries and points out how to realize both urbanization and urban modernization.The thesis ends up in a vivid simile: Urbanization and urban modernization are just like two wheels of a bicycle. They depend on each other and promote each other' s advancement.
