A Research On The Theory Of Sustainable And Harmonious Economic Development

After 1989, the third generation leaders of Chinese Commnist Party(CPC) have proposed ,among others that have enriched and developed Mr Deng Xiao-ping's economic development strategies, the theory of sustainable and harmonious economic development,which is based upon Chinese characteristics and the present world trends. Ever since then, this theory has become one of the two strategies that may determine the realization of the modernizations of China in the new century. However, There have been so few studies on this theory that it becomes urgent in both theory and practice, for the purpose of making new progress in economic and social development in the new century, to analyze and summarise the essense of the theory ot sustainable and harmonious economic development.This thesis paper consists of basically four sections.Part I: social and economic backgrounds both nation and world wide. In this section, it concerns about: this theory's becoming an integral part of world social and economic development trends; the contradictions of problems in the fields of population, environmant and resources and requirements of modernizations of China; and Mr Deng Xao-ping's original ideas about sustainable development.Part II: the main content of this theory. This section discusses about four strategies included in the theory of sustainable and harmonious economic development: sustainability of population; utility and sustainability of natural resourses; sustainability of the environment; and co-ordinated development of population, natural resourses, environment.Part III : the approaches to carry out the strategies. Since 1990, the third generation leaders of CPC have laid down a series of polices and principles to promote the realizaton of sustainable development, and have managed to find out approaches with Chinese characteristics. Theydecide to insist on the fundamental national policies of: population control; preservation, utility and sustainability of natural resources; protection of environment; priority of science and education and their roles in prospering the country; and the last but not the least, sustainability of international cooperation.Part IV: the significance of the theory of sustainable and harmonious economic development. In this section, it deals with the significance in the following aspects: This theory enriches and develops Mr. DengXiao-ping's thoughts greatly; it gives rise to the fulfilment of the "three-step" strategy; it embodies the CPC's poplicy to benefit the people's interestes; it helps promote the international status and prestige of Chinese government; and it also benefits world peace and prosperity.
