| This is an academic thesis in which the unbalancing development of regional economy in Hunan was quantitatively studied. The present research conditions of regional economic difference in China and Hunan were briefly reviewed. The theoretical significance and practical significance of the study on regional difference in Hunan were elaborated. The main theories of regional difference variation were cited, such as: the theory of divergence, the theory of convergence, the theory of inverted "U", the theory of new growth, the theory of cyclical fluctuation. The divergent tendency of the regional economic difference in Hunan from the enforcement of the policy of reform and opening and the convergent characteristics of the difference between some central cities and its peripheral regions in Hunan were analyzed in this thesis. The correspondence of the variation of the regional economic difference in Hunan to the theory of inverted "U", the theory of cyclical fluctuation was studied. This thesis sought the research of regional difference from the aspects of unit's being decided, variable's being selected and the methods of difference's being measured. It emphasized on the study of differences among 14 cities (prefectures) by means of connecting absolute difference with relative difference of per capita GDP. The difference among 107 counties (cities, districts) was also researched. The index system composed of 23 main indexes reflecting the standard of infrastructure, economic development and social development was established in this thesis to measure the regional difference in Hunan. Based on the index system, with the aid of SPSS, the difference of 14 cities' (prefectures) comprehensive economic level was thoroughly studied by principal componentanalysis. The case that Changsha city's comprehensive economic development level is by far the highest indicates the single-pole characteristic of the spatial structure of Hunan's economic development. By counting the standard deviation and the standard deviation coefficient of per capita GDPs of 14 cities (prefectures) in Hunan since 1990, it studied the total level of regional economic difference and the variation tendency of the unbalancing development of regional economy. Both absolute difference and relative difference among per capita GDPs of 14 cities(prefectures) increased year by year since 1990-the absolute difference increased linearly--and this increased tendency wouldn't change in short period. By counting the discrete and ratio between per capita GDP of every city (prefectures) and that of the total province, the relative development speed of every region and the industrial structure of every region, I think that the characteristic of the spatial structure of regional economic difference in Hunan is that the area along the Beijing-Guangzhou railway line in the east of Hunan developed fast, while the vast area in the west of Hunan developed slowly, so the regional difference increased constantly. On the difference background between the east and the west of Hunan, there is the difference between central region and fringe region, for one thing it shows ring difference, namely Chang-Zhu-Tan internal ring, surrounding Chang-Zhu-Tan medium ring, the outermost external ring, the most underdeveloped counties lie on the fringe and mountain regions in the west, south and east of Hunan, for another it displays that the peripheral regions of 13 prefectural cities aremore developed than the other. Traditional theories of regional economic development-thetheory of balancing development and the theory of unbalancing development and the results of these theories practiced in regional economic development in China and Hunan were researched. The positive effect and the negative effect of the unbalanced development in China and Hunan were respectively studied too.
