Research On Regional Industry Clusters Under The Epoch Of Knowledge Economy

This thesis chooses 'regional industry cluster under the epoch of knowledge economy' as its research target. It defined region as a geographic space that has relatively independent,strongly connective inside,comprehensive economic activities that perform particular functions. This kind region includes large,middle and small cities as well as region counterpart to province. The industries researched refer to traditional,high-tech,information and communication industry. As far as firms are concerned,the emphasis is given to small and medium enterprises. This thesis aims at changing the research views in following aspects:Regional single industry development strategies should be taken place of by regional spanning sectors or industry value-chains division economy development strategies;Establishing an innovation network in which enterprises cluster is the core and government and research institutes are supplementary;Utilizing inter-firm innovation networks to integrate dissociated independent firms;Changing the attitudes toward small and medium firms and fostering a comprehensive firms clusters which not only dedicate efforts to large firms;Accelerating traditional and high-tech industries development together instead of only emphasizing on high-tech industries;Regarding the hard environment and soft regional innovation environment equally important. This thesis is divided into five chapters:Chapter one:Discussing fundamental conceptions -,characteristics and significance of Knowledge Economy and summing up the characteristics of regional economy industries and firms under the epoch of knowledge economy. Based on the discussion before,distinctive features about industries clusters under the epoch of knowledge economy are put forward.Chapter two:Giving a comprehensive review about regional economy development relative to agglomeration;Systematically summing up the historical development of industry agglomeration theories as well as the important ideas of themajor theories. Based on the theories,taking Guangdong firm clusters as an example to argue three cause and three models of formation of industry clusters. Identification standards typical types and construction of industries are discussed. Practice of industry clusters in China and beyond is researched and compared,and significant enlightenment is obtained.Chapter three:On the base of last two chapters,this chapter focused on the way to realize industry clusters development under the epoch of knowledge economy-regional innovation system. Through systematical analysis of system construction major functions and efficiency of regional innovation system,the core of the system is found. Several typical regional innovation networks and the comparison among them are utilized to get some important enlightenment to develop regional innovation system in China.Chapter four:The relevance and mutual stimulative functions as well as competitive advantages created by them are researched. This thesis argued that industry clusters and regional innovation system are equally important for developing regional economy.Chapter five:This summary section comes up with suggestions concerned with regional economic policies about developing regional industry clusters and building regional innovation system.
