The 2010 Expo will be held in Shanghai in 2010. This means definitely an important chance in economic development for both Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area. This paper explores the implications and effects of the 2010 Shanghai Expo on the overall economic development of Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area and, based on this, tries to give an advice to the decision-making of the local governments on a scientific base in both individual development of themselves and a coordinated development of Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area. At the same time, it discusses the relationships between Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area, principles of industrial chains, rationalization of industrial distribution and etc..In order to meet the above objectives, this paper contains six main parts. The first part introduces to the research background, e.g. economic globalization, the trend of regional cooperation and integration and the exhibition economy. It studies also the relationships between the 2010 Shanghai Expo and the economic development of Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area by reviewing of the relevant theories. The second part introduces to the progress of the 2010 Expo made by Shanghai government through a detailed analysis and assessment correspondingly. The third part analyzes the actual influence of the 2010 Expo on the economic development of Shanghai. The forth part discusses the actual influence of the 2010 Expo on the overall economic development of the Yangtze Delta Area. The fifth part, based on the two preceding parts, discusses the actual effects on integrated development of Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area produced by the 2010 Expo. The sixth part makes the conclusions.The main innovative areas in this paper are: i) using Michael E. Porter s theory of national competitive advantages and the theory of industrial agglomeration in analyzing the economic implications and effects on development of Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area by the 2010 Expo; ii) based on two case studies of Japan for reference, analyzes the economic implications and effects on the overall development of Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area; iii) explores the integrated development effects on Shanghai and the rest of the Yangtze Delta Area; iv ) puts forward to suggestions in using of the buildings after the 2010 Expo, foundations for facilities development and, meanwhile, the negative effects.
