In this study, life circle assessment (LCA), as one of the advanced and standard environmental management tools, is systematically used to evaluate the current environment state and progress of the ISP in Shaoguan smelter, in order to point out the shortcomings, challenges & chances, and provide the correct advice for the structure adjustment of its raw materials, energy and products.It was found that zinc refining, production of SiC and transportation had very little effect on each environmental index of zinc products, and sintering, smelting and powder were the key for the improvement of environment. Especially, SO2 emission with low-concentration and heavy metals should be controlled and improved as the key of the present work, and zero emission of waste water and obvious decrease of sulfur oxide should be the pursuit in the near future. The detailed improvement measures including the following: new techniques and processes, such as sulfur removal by zinc oxide and deep purification of waste water, should be applied, and the standard environmental management system of ISO 14001 should be established to obtain sustainable improvement. Based on the LCA of ISP, the improvement measures in resource, energy and environment of ISP in Shaoguan smelter were proposed for the structure adjustment of raw materials, zero emission of wastes, clearproduction and EMS establishment of ISO 14001 environment management system.
