With the rapid development of service industry through the world and the expansion of international trade of service since 1970s, trade of service has been critical to the development of world economy and trade. It has also become a subject of multilateral trade negotiations. International trade of service is a new field of international competitions and it is one of the key factors, which contribute to the international competitiveness of a nation. Therefore, it is an important measure to facilitate the domestic economy and extend the international trade for all countries, esp. those developed ones by means of promoting the liberalization of international trade of service. General Agreement of Trade of Service (GATS) symbolizes that international trade of service is developing in a more regularized and liberalized way.China is a country with a relatively lower level of service industry and service trade. However, as a member country of WTO and a signer of GATS, China should perform its promise step by step. In this case, there is a realistic significance for China to be conscious of the importance of service trade in the development of its international trade, to study appropriate protective and open strategies, to adopt positive measures to accelerate the development of domestic service industry in order to strengthen its competitiveness in international trade of service and to exert the positive function of service trade on the development of the whole economy. The thesis gives an introduction of the current conditions of China's service industry and service trade with relative consideration of the trend of international trade of service; makes a study on the necessity and feasibility of China's opening service market and carrying out liberalization strategies in service trade; and presents corresponding general principles, opening phases, strategies and strategic emphases.
