Road of the social development has always been the focus questionthat thinkers generally pay close attention to.The debate of this questionforms one of the basic contents of modem social philosophy. As one ofthe important representative figures of the modem Americanpragmatism,Hook mended and developed the theory of t001.In terms ofthe theory, all existing in the world has the meaning oftool and the toolis the key for mankind to understand and control the world. The constantaltemative and unblocked use of tools embodies democracy and science, rational and harmonious of the world. In view of this philosophicalfoundation,Hook put forward"democratic socialism",advocatedoverall democracy of the whole people, and criticized various socialtheories including Marxism. Many disputes broke out then. However, research fields of philosophy in the world all misunderstood Hook to a certain extent. They or judged him in political attitude,or divided him stiffly. This text thinks Hook'S theory is coherent according to all his thoughts. He isn't a party—spirited man but a scholarly fighter. However,Hook'S theory itself of democracy what is unripe and unilateral, has some unpractical coloE We think the ideal of Marxism remains a feasible choice today.
