Manufacturing industry is one of the main supports to our national economy. Advanced computer technology, network technology, communication technology and information technology are adopted to rebuild and upgrade traditional industries, which is the important way for enterprises to survive and develop. Modern enterprises are in the economic environment of globalization and informationalization, and they need urgently to construct a transparent business procedure that goes through product lifecycle. Considering the status of manufacturing and the trend of future development of modern enterprises, the product lifecycle management (PLM) technology based on GIS is studied deeply in this paper, the product lifecycle model is established, the conception and theory of product flow facing lifecycle is put forward, the structure of product lifecycle management system (PLMS) based on GIS has been build up with product flow technology, the implement method and the application of the system are also researched.Firstly, conceptions and characteristics of the relevant theory and methods of PLM are introduced in this paper, and it is indicated that PLM is an important developing direction of enterprises' informationalization.Secondly, in this paper multi-view product model supporting distribution management is established, the main model structure of Product/Event/Resource/-Constraint/Organization/Route oriented to object and its application are discussed in detail. Based on that, the conception of product flow is put forward and the modal of product flow is established. Product flow is the abstract demonstration on the activity of product life, which is the further integration and unification of product model. Based on manufacturing activity, product flow is set up, the material flow, capital flow,information flow and their relevant procedures and applications of the enterprise are integrated, and therefore the integration and the automation of business process are realized.Thirdly, the information model of PLM is analyzed in this paper. Aiming at the limits of common methods of PLM, the PLM method based on the product flow theory and product-data management is put forward with life-view management. Every part of lifecycle chain are covered in the PLMS, and life status of product is clearly and straightly visualized by product life view, which provides PLM with information carrier and integrates information smoothly.Fourthly, the approaches of system design and system implement of PLMS based on the product flow theory and GIS are discussed in detail in this paper. Considering the network operation status of modern enterprises, the system structure of PLMS based on the combination of C/S and B/S structure is build up. The system is comprised of three function modules: application function, user management and data management. There are five sub-modules in application function module: foundation data management, product warehouse management, drawings and files management, product configuration management and product lifecycle view management. These functions basically meet the requirement of the modern information integration and management. By use of the powerful property of drawing layer management of GIS, property data and spatial data is united through graphic object, and therefore the visible management of PLM system has been realized.Lastly, the industry heat, exchanger PLM system based on GIS and Windows system is introduced at length, which is developed by Delphi and Microsoft SQL Server. Particular functions, development process and interface design of the system are discussed in detail.
