The main work of this paper is to find out the difference of the structure of merchandise trade in the East-Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea and to point out the degree and scope of trade competition of these countries, on basis of which the author discusses about the feasibility issue on the establishment of the free trade area for China, Japan and Korea. The advantage theory in the trade development of China is taken as frame of theoretical analysis of this Article. It is stressed that in China trade structures need to be ceaselessly optimized on the basis of the active exertion of comparative advantages, competitive advantages and backwardness advantages, so as to improve the overall level of trade structures and foster the national trade development. In this paper, the author firstly compares the increases in and transition of the export and import merchandise trades of China, Japan, Korea and the U.S. in recent twenty years, and then analyzes the changes in the comparative advantages of domestic merchandise trades of every relevant country. The author, for the first time, brings the concept of value-added content of product into traditional method of trade related comparative advantage, through which it is shown that there exit strengths and weaknesses in the commodity scope of trade competition and the degree of competition in China, Japan, Korea and the U.S.. At the same time, the author calculates and analyzes the degree of overall competition in the commodity export trades between the four countries and other relevant countries. In this paper, the amended structural model of exported products is used to compare the overall difference between the trade structures of various countries. The adoption of this model resolves the problem arising from the previous method that the difference between the levels of trade structures of various countries can be compared only on the basis of some specific product or commodity, so as to provide effective evaluation criterion for the comparison of the levels of trade structures of various relevant countries. As shown in the results of calculation, there still exist relatively great disparities in the overall levels of trade structures of such countries as China, Japan and Korea. On the basis of the comparison and analysis of the advanced indexes of export structures of various countries, the author makes use of the method of multivariate linear regression analysis to analyze the influence of the factors, such as industrial structures, level of human development, level of social informatization, direct foreign investment, inflation, energy consumption and progress of urbanization, on the level of trade structure of one country. The author finally brings forward in this paper that China should use and full exert the trade comparative advantages to fulfill the trade development of China, and, through adjusting the industrial policies and fostering the construction of national informatization, improve the merchandise trade structures of China, so as to propel the development of national trade. In the aspect of systematic construction, the author thinks the construction of regional economic organization greatly affects the trade development of China. The author also advances that the establishment of a free trade zone for China, Japan and Korea is a preferred strategy for China to push the progress of the East-Asian regional economic integration.
