| Sustainable development is a vital theoretical and practical issue confronted by human being, which involves domains such as economy, society, population, resources and environment, etc.. At present the research on evaluation of sustainable development is still in initial stage at home and abroad, integrated system of indices has not been established,which affects the implement of strategy of sustainable development.This paper proceeds with origin of sustainable development, reviewes historical course of produce and development of the sustainable development thought, provides a frame model of urban sustainable development based on systematic analysis of concept, intension and characteristic of urban sustainable development. We can establish an appraisal system of indices based on philosophy thought foundation of evaluation and home and foreign achievements in research on urban sustainable development, which involves stratification with objectives, standards, scopes and indices and five systems amount to 47 indices. At last, regard Huanggang city of Hubei Province as the instance , from the respects, such as economy, society, population, resource and environment, etc., the current situation of sustainable development to Huanggang city is appraised , and the countermeasures are put forward.
