Juvenile dropout in compulsory education is a worldwide difficult problem and has been extensively attended in many countries in the world. The study in our country in juvenile dropout mainly focuses on ruralarea, but seldom treats of the problem in urban. The thesis just concentrates on urban juvenile dropout problem in such a developed metropolis as shanghai, and probes into the underlying social structural causes and the relations between dropout and social transformation and transition. The study finds out the hidden dropout phenomena i. e. the covered dropout truth existing in shanghai, mainly including 4 kinds: â‘ students leave school without any procedure; â‘¡students who quit the course leave school with unfinished scholastic curricula chiefly by the way of being too old to stay in school; â‘¢part students who complete the course leave school long before their finishing scholastic curricula with a failing graduation examination ?part graduate students leave school long before their finishing scholastic curricula with a successful graduation examination. The thesis takes the qualitative approach embracing literature, in-depth case interview and observation method. The study is from sociology angle different from the past study' s pedagogy angle. It probes into the causes and mechanism of juvenile dropout with the poverty culture theory, by the four dimensions as society, community, family and individual. The thesis analyzes 8 representative cases in turn in context according to 4 family types in poverty culture theory, discussing juveniles' growing background and process which include community atmosphere, family environment, school experience, and the life after dropout etc.The study finds out that poverty culture is the fundamental cause of urban juvenile dropout. Community and family' s poverty culture passes on to juveniles by various ways, shaping juveniles' sub-culture, which is different from school' s mainstream culture. Juveniles can' t adjust to school' s culture and suffer failure and frustration in school. Whenthe depression accumulates to a certain degree, the juvenile is prone to take the way of dropout.Poverty culture' s production is related to the social transformation and transition in which, a good many workers lose their job, social rich-poor gap enlarges and urban poverty problem appears. When the poverty state lasts to a certain time, accumulates to a certain degree, the poverty culture is apt to produce; poor community' s formation is helpful to community poverty culture. Whereas poverty culture' s production is also related to individual' s personality. Social transition makes personal flaws exposed and intensified, which need be looked on bilaterally.
