A Study Of The Great Powers On The Korean Peninsula After The Cold War

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired scores of artillery onto a South Korean island called Yeonpyeong Island and also into waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula near a tense maritime board in 2011. This causes the situation of the Korean Peninsula to be more anxious. Keeping stability of Korean Peninsula, not only will relate the peaceful unification of the DPRK and Korea, but also will have something to do with the benefits and gambling of the US, Japan, Russia and China. The Korean Peninsula is an area which the benefits of the four great nations connected. It is of great strategic sense to the US, Japan, Russia and China. Four countries hope that they can participate in the business of the Korean Peninsula through their policy. Therefore, the research on the policy adjustment and influence of the four countries to the Korean Peninsula has the enormous practical significance.This article is divided into six parts:The first part has outlined the core of the Korean Peninsula security problem, that is, the North Korean Nuclear Issue. It also combs the origin and eruption of North Korean Nuclear Crisis. On this basis, the article analyzes the reasons which cause the crisis from the DPRK, the US and the contrast of international strength. It also analyzes the influence to the area of the Northeast Asia in politics, economy and security.At the same time, this part outlines the six-party talks which are for the purpose of solving the Korean Peninsula Issue, and points out the difficulties that the six-party talks have at present.The second part elaborates the US which does not belong to the Northeast Asia has great influence on the Korean Peninsula after the Cold War. This part analyzes the tortuous relationship between the DPRK and the US and the development of the US-Korea Union after the Cold War. Thus it can explain the reasons why the US adopts this kind of policy on the Korean Peninsula and reveals its benefits and the strategic intentions. The US has the incomparable superiority in the Korean Peninsula Issue. The US hopes that they can put the Peninsula into their own strategic which depends on their own strength and the US, Japan and Korea military alliance, so that the US can contain China and Russia and form the leadership in Northeast Asia. The third part elaborates the relationship between Japan and the DPRK, Japan and Korea. It promulgates the benefits and intentions of Japan in the Korean Peninsula. That is, constructing the Northeast Asia system in the Japanese leadership by the Japan-US Union and the construction of Japan's political power. Relies on its economic potentiality and the alliance, Japan has the material effect on the Korean Peninsula Issue. However, because of history and political status, Japan is also restricted to behave itself in the peninsula.The fourth part analyzes the policy adjustment of Russia to the DPRK and Korea after the Cold War. That is, from"one-sided on the Korea"to"equidistant north and south". As a result, Russia makes the adjustment to the peninsula policy after realizing the important strategic position of the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, Russia can obtain political and economic interest and prevent Russia from pushing aside the peninsula business. At the same time, it can provide the platform for Russia to remold its great nation status. In fact, Russia is of great influence on peninsula which depends on its still formidable politics and the military power.The fifth part discusses the diplomatic efforts that China impels on the peninsula peace process. China has very close relation to peninsula on the politics, economy and security. The permanent peace and stability of peninsula conforms to the Chinese benefit strategic choice. Therefore, China positively facilitates the six-party talks and makes best efforts to contribute to the Korean Peninsula.The sixth part is mainly on the forecast of Korean Peninsula with the joint forces of the US, Japan, Russia and China. It not only points out the strategic intention and strength gambling of four countries, but also their contribution to the stability to the Korean Peninsula. It includes positive attitudes about four countries to six-party talks, and their diplomatic efforts in the peninsula issue.Therefore, this article elaborates the evolution of the Korean Peninsula Issue from the above six aspects. It also analyzes the strategic intention and influence of the US, Japan, Russia and China. It is of practical significance on the security and development of the entire Northeast Asia.
