National character is a complexed concept about which scholars have divergent views.Because of uncertainty and indistinction of its connotation, there have quite a few definitions about national character in Chinese academic circles. Most of scholars hold that it means that there exist social phychological characteristics and spiritual state which are stable, and universal among the most members of a nation. It is phychological disposition which is stable and appears again and again among most of citizens, and it is a latent awareness deep in their hearts and a low social awareness. Essentially, it is social phychology in the nation, or atternatively, it is comparatively stable and lasting spiritual state and phychological characteristic which form during the course of long historical development of a nation and is embodied by habits, attitude, affection in the common culture characteristics of the nation. Remoulding the national character, as the term suggests, is the rethink criticism and reform of the national character. It means that the pioneers of respective countries, the self-experience phychological condition, spiritual outlook, orientation of values, thoughts and affection and model of behavior of people by the means of introspection. It is often connected with great change, especially national catastrophe, and is infused with deep awareness of misery and intense spirit of reform. So it can become spiritual motivation of the national consciousness and progress.Remoulding the national character of the two countries, China and Japan, is to realize modernization of persons in essence in modern times, and is an important part of modernizational course.
