As a main representation of communitarianism, the social and political philosophy is the pith of Charles Taylor's thought. But Self and Community are the substantive category of the social and political philosophy. With the beginning of studying Self, Taylor discovers that the Self cannot be formed and developed without others and the community for the Self. On the base of criticizing atomism, Taylor expounds his communitarianism.Taylor's main purpose that he promotes his ideas of self and community is to construct his politics of recognition Through analyzing the relation between self and community, Taylor thinks our politics should be politics of recognition and contemporary politics turn on the need for recognition. Both community and self are equally recognized and respected in Taylor's politics of recognition. And culture is one features of community, so different cultures have equal status. Taylor insists that culture is plurality and every community has its own specific cultural value and survival. They are should be equally recognized. Taylor is against the centeralism and hegemonism of culture and calls for establishing an equal multiculturalism.
