Charles Taylor is one of the most significant philosophers in modern western philosophy academia. His thought has been widely influence the practice of the western world. Taylor has studied many important issues in philosophy, especially in political philosophy, such as Hegel’s thought, the resource of Self, Identity and Multiculturalism, etc. This paper mainly focuses on his idea of "politics of recognition" and attempt to study and explicate its contents and significance.After reviewing Taylor’s life, developments of his thoughts and their connections in the first chapter, there is a detailed analysis on the theory basis of "politics of recognition" in the following chapter:the judgments on modernity of Taylor, especially his points on ideal of authenticity. Meanwhile, Hegel’s discuss about recognition and its renewal also provide a theoretical background for the "politics of recognition"Taylor’s "politics of recognition" is based on those theories, but also derive to the development of multiculturalism in actual politics. Taylor held that "recognition" became a question is because two changes of modern society:the rise of honor and the ideal of authenticity. And the connections and contradictions between the politics of universialism and the politics of difference showed the limits of political principles. Taylor made a positive attempt to find another way to coordinate both of them.At the final part, concerning the debate about this issue, both abroad and domestic, I evaluate this thought through three different perspectives. Then I would discuss the issues of China and several problems of examining the development referring to the ideas of "politics of recognition" and its positive inspirations.
