Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory, as a result of the combination of Marxism-Leninism and the educational practice of China, embody abundant theories and thoughts in education which are distinctly characterized by reality and spirit of the times and have enormously influenced and promoted the development and reform of Chinese education. As is of great realistic significance to building socialism with Chinese characteristics, we can, through engaging in a comparative study, absorb valuable experience from their educational thoughts, thereby developing Chinese education better.As an important component of Mao Zedong's educational thoughts, Deng Xiaoping's educational thoughts have enriched and developed them. There exist some same and different opinions between Mao Zedong's and Deng Xiaoping's resulted from the different times which they lived in, the different central tasks which they shouldered in the different times, and the different analyses and judgments which they made in different situations. Mao Zedong's educational thoughts developed and grew up in the initial period of Chinese new-democratic revolution and socialist construction, which played a great guidance role in formulating educational policies at that time. By contrast, Deng Xiaoping's educational thoughts developed on the basis of the practice of socialist construction and a good grasp of Chinese reality, meanwhile further developed on the basis of affirming and inheriting Mao Zedong's educational thoughts.This paper, through a comparative study between Mao Zedong's and Deng Xiaoping's educational thoughts, points out, from educational positions, functions, directions, objectives, ways and reforms, the generalities and diversities between them.
