It was in 1980s that China and the Soviet Union actively promoted economic and political reforming campaign, in which process intensive trends toward modernization prominently emerged. The reforming campaign in both countries directed socialism. However, different modernization patterns were constructed by the distinction of the choice of start points, value orientations, policies and mythologies.The dissertation consists of five parts. The author makes analysis and comparisons on the modernization course of China and the Soviet Union according to the related political theory.Part one mainly concerns theoretical contents which probes into the theories and connotations of Political modernization, and analyses the background in which the theories of Political modernization were born--- their development and evolution, including the analysis of choice and consideration of the related theories. The author also clarifies many scholars opinions on the meaning of political modernization theory, which intrude was the basic angle to look at the topic—the rationalization of authority, the disintegration of political structure, the amplifying of political participation and the construction modern political culture. These are theoretical framework of analysis of this dissertation.Part two compares and analyses the political rationalization process of China and the Soviet Union. Starting from the three maintaining elements of political authority (ideological direction; operations of political systems and norms; exertion of political results), the author compares and analyses the foundations and rationalization process of political authority in both countries in the 1980s.Part three compares and analyses the disintegration process of political structure.
