From 1972 to the end of the Cold War, Japan had conformed to the 1972 Sino-Japan Joint Communiquéand maintained informal and economic ties with Taiwan. However, after the Cold War, Japan has tried to break through the 1972 Joint Communiquéand to develop political and security relations with Taiwan. But at that time Japan's policy toward Taiwan was still ambiguous. When Koizumi Junichiro was in office, Japan announced the Common Strategic Objective with America to encourage the peaceful resolution of issues concerning the Taiwan Strait through dialogue. It signaled the strong inclination of Japan to interfere in the Taiwan issue. Not until then did Japan's policy toward Taiwan become clear.
