Social justice is the main theme during the whole progress of human development. From ancient Greece to today, the theory of social justice have taken different kinds of forms, and our human beings never give up the pursuit of social justice. Nowadays, although many great thinkers call up for social justice, social justice faces tough challenge both in home and abroad. In the international environment, there exists much unjust phenomenon in economic, political and cultural areas. In domestic, because of the market economy, the standard of living has been promoted in great extent, however, the gap between the rich and the poor have been also enlarged. In this paper, firstly, it talks about the historical development of the theory of social justice from ancient times to modern times, from the west to the east. Then it pays much attention to the theory of social justice of Marx and Engels: the definition of social justice---freedom and equality, justice in distribution. It also demonstrates the logic development of their theory of social justice as well as their theoretic characteristics in order to analyze the whole theory of social justice of Marx and Engels and contribute to seek the foundation of pursuit of social justice in our ChinaLastly, it points out that the construction of political civilization, the perfection of socialist market economy and the establishment of a harmonious society can not be achieved without social justice.
