When all of the 10 developing countries in Southeast Asia have joined ASEAN in 1999, the great ASEAN came into existence. ASEAN, as a whole economic zone, or a regional interest group, anyway is becoming an important geo-political force is changing strategic configuration of Asia-Pacific areas.China has further developed its good-neighborly relations with surrounding countries, mainly the Southeast Asia countries; China has vigorously started up CAFTA (China-ASEAN Free Trade Area). Through geographical analysis, we can conclude China's geographical strategy to ASEAN. From geopolitical point view, China endeavors to break through safety dilemma, striving for a stable, as well as peaceful periphery environment. Geo-economically speaking, China plays stress on economic cooperation development, meant to create a friendly regional surrounding in favor of China's speed-up economy. Geo-culturally, China is eager to clear up the tale of "threat of China" in Southeast Asia and take it as a good district in term of demonstration district. As a result, China increases its devotion to ASEAN, and its geo-strategy in Southeast Asia is followed: safeguard region stability and peace; promote regional economy integration; highlight ASEAN in its surrounding diplomatic practice; put to good use of balance man oeuvres to maintain China's national interest.Japan is one of our neighboring countries on the sea, and is adjacent to Southeast Asia. From its economic ties with ASEAN members, or the consistency of their relations, no matter what, Japan is a main power who can affect Southeast Asia countries. After the cold war, Japan continues to enhance its vital role in resuscitating these countries in politics and economics. Mostly, Japan holds bilateral safety talk with its ASEAN partners. In addition, Japan look for multilateral channel with ASAEN. From geo-political and geo-economical, the two aspects, this paper analyze Japan's geo-strategic interests in Southeast Asia region, also figure out its two features: give prominence to its sea power & take economical practice as a major form. That is, play America-Japan alliance as the standard shaft; expand its sphere of influence in Southeast Asia, and contest against to get the leading power of regional integration in East Asia; hook certain countries to play balance of power against China at the same time. Further, this thesis makes a comparison to the similarities and differences of China's and Japan's geo-strategy. It believes that the two have four common grounds: make sure of the safety of the sea channels; broaden economic benefit; uphold political stability; extend influences in Southeast Asia. However, they are different at two aspects, one is their strategic objectives. China holds to maintain peace to be its lofty purpose, and purse its foreign policy of peace by developing friendly relations with Southeast Asia. On the other hand, Japan wants to control the vital seaways; acquire the dominant power in the region; charge that China is a potential enemy. The other difference is the means to deal with the geo-strategy. Besides, this article looks into the differences and gets the reasons from three points: geo-political interest between Japan and China is disparate; America attempts to interfere; ASEAN plays the balance of power strategy. Finally, it is about the impact to East Asia cooperation.
