| During the Agrarian Revolution, the songs of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army emerged and developed based on the political work of the Army. Being the carrier of the songs, the Red Army played a crucial role in doing its political work. The boom and decline of the songs were due to historical reasons and reality. The songs were important in that they inspired the Red Army, improved and consolidated the fighting capacity of the forces, and were the most direct and effective in doing political work. They were an important form of political work, and their relevant musical activities were components of political work. With their clear-cut themes and political orientation, the songs played a significant role in the political work of the Red Army. They directly promoted political publicity and military combat through inspiring the Red Army, making the enemy forces to fall apart, launching vigorous offensives, enforcing discipline rigorously, regulating the Red Army, mobilizing the public and universalizing the revolution. Based on political work, the songs had esthetic and cultural characteristics and showed the influence of politics on art. The mode of expression of the songs embodied esthetic and cultural characteristics based on "practical rationality", while their themes manifested "revolution-based" esthetic and cultural characteristics which had been prevalent in revolution art since the May 4th Movement. |
